Microbial ecology is a relatively young discipline within the field of microbiology. Its modern history spans just the past 60 years, and the field is defined by its emphasis on understanding the interactions of microbes with their environment, rather than their behavior under artificial laboratory conditions.

Microbial ecology The study of interrelationships between microorganisms and their living and nonliving environments. Microbial populations are able to tolerate and to grow under varying environmental conditions, including habitats with extreme environmental conditions such as hot springs and salt lakes. Microbial ecology is the science that specifically examines the relationship betw een microorganisms and their biotic and abiotic environment. Like plant, animal, and human Larry L. Barton studies the physiological activities of environmentally important microorganisms, focusing on energetics of bacterial inorganic metabolism and bacterial bioremediation.

Microbial ecology and particular the water microbial ecology studies the relationships among microorganisms and the way they influence water environments, by using principles and methods from microbiology, chemistry, physics, ecology, mathematics, and computer science.

Microbial ecology

Microbial ecology aims to determine the patterns and drivers of microbial community distribution, interaction, and assembly. Most types of microbes remain unknown. It is estimated that we know fewer than 1% of the microbial species on Earth. Yet microbes surround us everywhere -- air, water, soil. An average gram of soil contains one billion (1,000,000,000) microbes representing probably several thousand species. Each microbial species in an ecosystem is thought to occupy a unique niche, which is a complex description of the ways in which an organism uses its environment. The precise ecological niche of a microbe is primarily determined by the specific metabolic properties of that organism.

While amplicon sequencing is a useful tool for describing microbial community composition, it is limited in its ability to quantify the function(s) performed by members of those communities. Microorganisms are the most abundant organisms on Earth and they are key players in carbon and nutrient cycling.

Synthetic microbial ecology (like synthetic biology) is not a completely new discipline, but recent advances in both mathematical modeling, and genetic and metabolic engineering appear to bring us closer to the goal of controling the dynamic behavior of simple synthetic microbial assemblages. Microbial Ecology Microorganisms are the most abundant organisms on Earth and they are key players in carbon and nutrient cycling. We know, however, very little about which microorganisms occur in aquatic environments, their spatial and temporal distribution patterns and their functional capabilities and overall importance for the maintenance of ecosystem functioning.
